About this release

Until his death in April 2013, George Jones was often referred to as the “greatest living country singer”. And as Waylon Jennings said in his song ‘It’s Alright’, “If we all could sound like we wanted to, we’d all sound like George Jones.”

George Jones’ career began in 1954, and during his six decades as a professional singer-songwriter, he recorded over 900 songs, and charted more than any other music artist, almost exclusively on the country charts. Either solo or as part of a duet, he placed nearly 150 songs on the charts. As a solo act, he had nine # 1 country hits, all of which are included on this 48 track 3 CD compilation, alongside his many other hits.

Recorded in 1959, White Lightning“, was his first # 1. Subsequent number 1 hits include perennial favourites like “She Thinks I Still Care” (1962, covered by Michael Nesmith in 1972), “Walk Through This World With Me” (1967), and “He Stopped Loving Her Today” (1980, named in several surveys as the greatest country song of all time). “A Good Year For The Roses”, a 1970 number 2 hit for Jones, gave Elvis Costello a Top 10 hit with his faithful cover version in 1981.
