Sadly The General, lead vocalist with Chairman Of The Board, passed away just a few months back just before Edsel were able to get this collection to market.
Formerly a member of many soul groups GJ eventually settled at Holland dozier Holland’s Invictus label after HdH left Motown. Fronting the Chairman, Johnson had a string of hits including Everything’s Tuesday, you’ve Got me dangling On a String and half a dozen other R’n’B top 50 hits. Sadly the group fell out with Invictus and largely due to contractual reasons Johnson headed over to Arista where this, his only album for that label was recorded. It contains Johnson’s version of his own composition Patches, a track that was a worldwide smash for Clarence Carter.
I have personally yearned the CD release of this LP for years and now complete with an exhaustive essay by compiler Tony Rounce the album enters the digital age along with a quartet of non-album singles, b-sides and 12-in mixes. Top tunes include, Only love Can Mend a Broken Heart, lies and We The People.
Virginia born Norman Johnson is best remembered these days for the string of classic soul singles that he recorded with Chairmen of the Board during the early seventies, including best-sellers such as “Give Me A Little More Time” and “Everything’s Tuesday”.
This anthology explores Johnson’s subsequent solo sojourn with the Artisa label, a much less successful phase of his career which spawned a solitary 1979 album dominated by a fine version of “Patches”, the Grammy award winning song which he’d penned for Clarence Carter six years earlier, and the unchallenged highlight of this slickly produced but essentially uninspired collection.
General Johnson died on 10th October in 2010. He is best-remembered as the principal member of the hit-making Chairmen Of The Board, for whom he provided lead vocals and wrote many of the hits, such as “Give Me Just A Little More Time” and “You Got Me Dangling On A String”. After the dissolution of the Chairmen Of The Board, Johnson signed to the Arista label in 1976. He recorded one album and handful of singles, brought together for the first time in this package. The extensive booklet notes are provided by acknowledged authority Tony Rounce.
