The 100 Hits label is adding to its popular 100 Hits: Legends series with new box sets by Johnny Cash, Crystal Gayle, Showaddwaddy and BB King.
As the labels name suggests, each new set includes five CDs containing 100 original tracks by each artist, including most of their best-known hits. With a typical retail price of around £7-£8 for 100 tracks, they offer exceptional value for money.
Other new 5CD box sets in the 100 Hits series include Rock Anthems (with artists such as Foreigner, ZZ Top and The Ramones), Disco Classics (including Candi Staton, Rose Royce, Chic and The O’Jays), and 80s Rewind (including Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Madness and Simply Red).
Johnny Cash’s youthful recorded output has generated countless anthologies over the years, and the latest addition to the mountainous pile of retrospectives is this weighty 5CD set from the Demon Music Group. The 100 tracks showcased here were all captured for the posterity more than half a century ago, including the strikingly spare and uncluttered tracks such as “Hey Porter” and “I Walk The Line” which first established “The Man in Black” as a major country performer during the late fifties. These early Cash hits also drew much of their appeal from the creative input of Luther Perkins, the self taught guitarist whose simple, strongly rhythmic approach to music-making was such a distinctive feature of the Tennessee Three’s sound during those far off days.
