Alphabetically, this is the first in a further batch of ten cds issued by Harmless Records in the ‘Backbeats’ series. The first ten were covered in issue #57 and, as before, the subject matter ranges from classic soul to funk and disco, ‘The Big Apple Bites Back’ representing the latter genre. Subtitled ‘New York House And Remix Culture’, this means in many cases, especially in the first half of the set, that tracks are extended to ensure the dancers are exhausted by the time they leave the floor. Larry Levan’s mix of Inner Life’s version of ‘Ain’t No Mountain High Enough’ takes the number to a whopping 10:24, Joe Clausell’s remix of Double Exposure’s ‘Everyman’ is just a little shorter at 9:56 and Kerry Chandler’s remix of ‘Doctor Love’ by First Choice is just a ‘modest’ 7:50. The purpose of this series is to essentially spotlight the music, thus liners are
relatively modest but, even so, the notes still contain a brief run-down and enough information to answer the sort of questions of which someone like me might feel the need to know... label sources, composers, year of issue, etc.
