Born in Indiana, Phyllis Nelson recorded from the late 1970s into the mid 1980s. In 1985 she recorded a self written ballad entitled "Move Closer". It was a complete departure from the type of music she had previously recorded.The song "Move Closer"was based on a long lasting love affair she had. "Move Closer"had little success in her homeland but it peaked at the number one spot in the UK singles chartin May 1985 making her the first black woman to top the UK singles chart with a self-composed offering. The song remained on the chart for almost six months, and became one of the highest selling singles of the year."Move Closer" returned once more to the British chart in 1994, making it into the Top 40 after it was featured in TV advert for deodorant.
In the U.S. Nelson had success with the dance classic "I Like You" for CarrereRecords. It was a huge dance hit for the Philadelphia vocalist charting number 65 R&B charts in the USA in late 1985. The song also peaked at Number in the Hot Dance Club Play chart.Sadly Nelson died from cancer in Los Angeles at the age of 47.
