Big band and orchestra-backed sides from the era when the former rocker went after the Sinatra audience with flair and panache.
Bobby Darin was known for his career changes: from bubble-gum pop to Sinatra-like swing, folk singer and stripped down balladeer, he’s a versatile talent. Three twofer CDs from Edsel cover his mid-60s output, a criminally neglected part of his career which has largely attracted poor reviews. Darin’s If I Were A Carpenter/Inside Out (µµµµµ/µµµµ Edsel) are both sensitive affairs, and possibly Darin at his most natural. Darin actually released …Carpenter as a single before the song’s writer, Tim Hardin, did. Hardin wasn’t best pleased with this, especially when it became a hit. Other Darin sets include Sings Doctor Dolittle/Born Walden Robert Cassotto (µµµ/µµEdsel) and Sings The Shadow Of Your Smile/In A Broadway Bag (µµµµ/µµµµEdsel)
