Although he appeared to have sprung on to the scene fully-formed with the release of his debut Atco album "Gris Gris" in 1968, Dr. John had already clocked up ten years in the New Orleans/Gulf Coast recording industry.
Under a variety of aliases, the "Walk On Gilded Splinters" man had been working in recording studios since 1957 (aged 15!) as a professional songwriter, session guitarist, pianist, producer, and artist in his own right. He recorded for a number of labels, including Ace Records of Jackson MS, and also for Huey P. Meaux’s Houston family of labels.
This CD, compiled and annotated by acknowledged expert Tony Rounce, brings together 26 of Rebennack’s finest ‘pre-fame’ recordings, providing a fascinating insight into his formative musical years.
