30th Anniversary EPs – Audio & Video EPs
“Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick”, was first released November 23, 1978 on the 7" single BUY 38 Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick / There Ain't Half Been Some Clever Bastards by Stiff Records. On the 27th of January 1979, “Rhythm Stick” was at number one. When they appeared on Top Of The Pops in to promote the single, they happened to be on the same show as Chic. Apparently, Bernard Edwards watched open-mouthed at Norman Watt-Roy’s amazing 16-note-to-the bar bass melodies. The single sold 979,000 copies in the UK. The original single cover – featured for the first time digitally on these EPs, was designed by Stiff's Barney Bubbles , the radical English graphic artist, most renowned for his distinctive contribution to the graphic design associated with the British independent music scene during the 1970s and early 1980s. The B-side was “There Ain't Half Been Some Clever Bastards”, was written by Dury and Russel Hardy, his co-writer from his time in the pub-rock band Kilburn & The Highroads.
