Hoyt Axton originally found fortune if not fame as a songwriter, writing “Greenback Dollar” for the Kingston Trio, “The Pusher” for Steppenwolf and “Joy To The World” for Three Dog Night. He also forged a career as a film actor, notably appearing in “Gremlins”. In between times he recorded his own successful country albums.
On “A Rusty Old Halo” (originally issued in 1979) Axton is backed by James Burton and Glen D. Hardin from Presley’s band, Dr. John, Garth Hudson of The Band, Stephen Stills, Paul Butterfield and Jeff Baxter of the Doobie Brothers. The album features “Della And The Dealer”, a UK hit in 1980.
“Where Did The Money Go” (1980) features his “on the road band” with a couple of Commander Cody’s Lost Planet Airmen, Bruce “Buffalo” Barlow and Bill Kirchen. The package features the lyrics and a sleevenote by Alan Robinson.
