Ian Gillan Band
This slipcase package features five of the albums that vocalist Ian Gillan recorded after his departure from Deep Purple in the mid 1970s, each of them housed in a miniature cardboard replica of the original album-cover. The contents span the years between 1976 and 1982, and Gillan seems much more comfortable with the hard-edged approach that dominates the later offerings after his brief and largely unsuccessful flirtation with jazz-rock in the Ian Gillan Band. Mind you, their ‘Live At The Budokan’ set does boast some appealing revamps of old Purple favourites such as ‘Child In Time’, ‘Smoke On The Water’ and ‘Woman From Tokyo’.
Classic Rock’s Best Reissues of 2007, January 2008
It’s easy to forget just how much good music Gillan the band delivered. And this timely series of reissues underlines the claim. Never as high-profile as Rainbow or Whitesnake, musically Gillan could match either of those Purple offshoots.
