“Career-spanning salute to the don of Chicago jazz-funk”
Terry Callier has the kind of vocal delivery that once heard is never forgotten. Most recently he appeared on Massive Attack’s single Live With Me which again earned him a whole new audience of eager ears.
Lovingly compiled by DJ and soul fanatic Johnny Chandler, Life Lessons charts Callier’s rise from the Chicago folk and jazz club circuit in the 1960s, an era which spawned tracks such as Spin, Spin, Spin and Look At Me Now, through to his surprising career resurrection in the 1990s, helped in no small part by his adoption by the British acid jazz movement. This phase of his career reflected on Life Lessons by such classics as Lazarus Man and No More Blues.
This two-disc set also features quite a few live tracks which, for a Callier retrospective, is nigh on essential, such is the man’s incredible live persona. Highlights of these include African Violet, Big City and Step Into The Light.
