I recently watched on DVD the biopic movie What’s Love Got To Do With It, which traces the troubled times of Ike and Tina Turner.
Ike was born in Clarksville, Mississippi, in 1931. Tina was born Annie Mae Bullock in 1938 and raised within those Nutbush city limits in Texas. After their divorce in 1976, Tina went on to become one of the superstars in music. Ike, however, went downhill and was jailed for a year in 1988 for cocaine offences and died last year.
This 40-track CD is a record of the duo’s early recordings, including their 1960 debut American hit A Fool In Love and the follow-up top twenty success, I Think It’s Gonna Work Out Fine. Tracks I like best though are the ones that show off Tina’s prowess as a raw blues singer.
Listen to songs like Otis Redding’s I’ve Been Loving You Too Long, Lowell Fulson’s Reconsider Baby, Jimmy Reed’s You Got Me Runnin’ and the overtly sexy Rock Me Baby – All Night Long.
