This 38 track, mid-price 2 CD set (along with Volume 2: 1974 – 1981), rounds up every released recording that Ann Peebles made for the legendary Memphis-based Hi label. Volume 1 contains her first three albums, as well as 6 non-album singles sides.
Attractively packaged with a slipcase, the booklet features extensive annotation by acknowledged expert John Ridley.
Influenced in equal parts by gospel legend Mahalia Jackson and local heroine Tina Turner, Ann Peebles made her R’n’B chart debut in April 1969 with her very first single, the start of a decade of chartbusters. Three of her singles made the Pop charts as well, including her great ‘crossover’ hit "I Can’t Stand The Rain", featured on this package.
With a style so direct, economical and real, Ann Peebles represents, along with contemporaries like Candi Staton and Denise LaSalle, a golden age of gospel-infused, country tinged southern soul.
