UK FILM ‘SOULBOY’ SET FOR RELEASE

10 August 2010

August sees the release of ‘Soulboy’: a highly anticipated new British film set in 1970s Wigan, set against the backdrop of the Northern Soul scene at the time. Starring Martin Compston (The Disappearance of Alice Creed), Nichola Burley (StreetDance 3D), Felicity Jones (Cemetery Junction) and Alfie Allen (Flashbacks of a Fool), ‘SoulBoy’ premiered at the Edinburgh International Film Festival in June, and opens nationwide on August 27th. With the recent success of other British music-based films such as Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll and Nowhere Boy, ‘Soulboy’ is sure to be huge!

Northern Soul developed from an underground movement in Manchester, when clubs saw the introduction of rare soul being played. This youth culture turned the North of England into 'the place to be' every Saturday night, and led to the opening of Wigan Casino: the scenes most famous all night venue, and where ‘SoulBoy’ is based.

Having already sold over 11,000 copies, 100 Hits Northern Soul is the perfect compilation of classic soul stompers to accompany the ‘SoulBoy’ release, including the Laura Greene classic ‘Moonlight, Music & You’. Demon Digital has other releases featuring Northern Soul favourites; ‘That Driving Beat’ and ‘Northern Soul Floorshakers!’

MICK JACKSON – BLAME IT ON THE BOOGIE

22 February 2010

After Michael Jackson’s tragic death in June 2009, there was a phenomenal resurgence of interest in his back-catalogue. The track that achieved the highest interest, selling another 35,000 copies on download after the tragic event, was Blame It On The Boogie – originally the work of one Mick Jackson.

Originally written with Stevie Wonder in mind, and rejected by some 22 record companies along the course of its journey to the top, Blame It On The Boogie was pitched to The Jacksons’ manager at MIDEM in 1978 and the rest, as they say, is history.

The story of Mick’s career is now a fascinating, feature-length documentary.
‘The Other Michael Jackson: Battle of the Boogie’ will air on Channel 4 on Friday, 26th February at 7.30pm.

Mick Jackson’s Blame It On The Boogie and his album Weekend are both available to download via iTunes.

IAN DURY & THE BLOCKHEADS - SEX&DRUGS&ROCK&ROLL

7 January 2010

This year marks the 10th Anniversary of Ian Dury’s passing and the release of the eagerly anticipated movie biopic of his life. To commemorate this, Demon will release a collection of his best known and biggest recordings, including the title track to the eagerly anticipated movie. ‘SEX&DRUGS&ROCK&ROLL’ –The Essential Collection’ is out on January 11th 2010.

‘SEX&DRUGS&ROCK&ROLL – The Essential Collection’ features original recordings as performed by Ian Dury & The Blockheads, including the classics ‘Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick’, ‘What A Waste’ and ‘Reasons To Be Cheerful,  Pt.3’, alongside exclusive tracks.

Ian Dury needs no introduction; the so-called working class ‘pop laureate’ of the late 70s  London music scene was known for his bold and brash spirit, outspoken lyrics and electrifying stage performances. Dury is undeniably a cult icon with a body of work still influencing music today.

The critically acclaimed biopic SEX&DRUGS&ROCK&ROLL starring Andy Serkis as Ian Dury, alongside Ray Winstone, Mackenzie Crook and Naomie Harris is in cinemas from January 8th 2010. The film is a no-holds-barred account of Dury’s rise to fame, including tales of his childhood, personal relationship, influences and how he dealt with and overcame his disability.

It was thirty years ago that Ian Dury gave us the first of his contributions to the list of great English phrases, ‘SEX&DRUGS&ROCK&ROLL. It’s hard to believe that it’s ten years since Ian Dury’s departure from the rock scene, however, this new collection serves as a great anthology of his career and testament that the recordings have stood the test of time.... 30 years on!

Ian Dury & The Blockheads ‘Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll – The Essential Collection’ is available on CD & Download from 11 Jan.

FOLK AMERICA ON BBC4

26 January 2009

BBC4’s new three-part documentary series Folk America traces the history of American folk music, from the recording boom of the 1920s to the folk revival of the 1960s.

Part one, Birth Of A Nation, aired last week and is still available on BBC’s iPlayer. Drawing on archive footage, interviews and many well known songs, it followed the development of folk music from its roots as the music of peasants and immigrants to its establishment as a profitable institution.

The programme identifies The Carter Family as “the people who would take [folk] music forward to a national audience, making it the voice of America”. The 2CD Roots Of Country: The Carter Family is due to be released on Music Club Deluxe next Monday.

Part two, This Is Your Land, explores the reformation of folk music as the voice of protest under the aegis of ‘dustbowl drifter’ Woody Guthrie. This episode will include contributors from Pete Seeger as well as Guthrie's sister and daughter and will air on 30th January at 21:00.

DMG released a series of American folk music albums last year, including This Is Your Land: The Story Of American Folk Music, Original Folk: The Best Of Woody Guthrie and Hard Travelling: The Best Of Pete Seeger.

BBC CLASSICS FIT FOR A KING

The New Wimbledon Theatre saw performances from Robin Williams, Joan Rivers, Eric Idle and Bill Bailey, and even a cameo from Andrew Sachs as his
Fawlty Towers alter-ego Manuel. Blackadder and Mr. Bean star Rowan Atkinson was in fine form, delivering a sermon as the eccentric vicar, and the show’s finale included an extravagant rendition of Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life.

We Are Most Amused will be broadcast on ITV1 at 8.35pm this Saturday.

Demon label BBC World Of Comedy, launched earlier this year, has brought some much-loved BBC sketches and sitcoms back to life, including

DANIEL O’DONNELL CONTINUES TO MAKE CHART HISTORY

4 November 2008

Daniel O’Donnell
is enjoying quiet success this week as his new album Country Boy debuted at No. 6 in the UK Album chart, delivering his 28th consecutive hit album.

It’s the eleventh time in his career Daniel has achieved a Top 10 album and he remains the only artist in chart history to have had at least one charting album every year since 1988 – a record he seems increasingly likely to hold onto for the foreseeable future.

The run into this week’s Top 10 saw a fierce battle with chart trendies Bloc Party and a down-to-the-wire battle with opera star Katherine Jenkins, who eventually charted at No.7, just 52 sales behind Daniel.

Daniel puts his success down to hard work and the most loyal fans in the business. He said, “I never thought I’d be playing to such big audiences all over the world. It’s beyond anything I ever imagined.”

His already certified Silver album is expected to go Gold in the coming weeks, as Daniel’s UK tour kicks off on 30th November and with a new DVD At Home In Ireland released on 10th November fans will have a Christmas to remember. His last 5 DVD releases have all been No. 1 hits.
