B.B. KING, AL GREEN AND OTIS REDDING “FIRST CLASS OF INDUCTEES TO THE NEW MEMPHIS HALL OF FAME”

18 October 2012

Bluff City icons W.C. Handy, Elvis Presley, B.B. King, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Al Green, were among the names announced as part of the first class of inductees to the new Memphis Music Hall of Fame on Tuesday.

The initiative, part of the Smithsonian-connected Rock 'n' Soul Museum, was launched with an event at downtown's The Warehouse. City of Memphis mayor AC Wharton, U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen, D-Tenn.; Rock 'n' Soul executive director John Doyle, and Memphis Convention and Visitor's Bureau President Kevin Kane, as well as various local music notables, were on hand to confirm the first class of 25 inductees, who will be honored with a ceremony on 29th November at The Cannon Center for the Performing Arts. The event will be open to the public.

Others set to be honored as part of the 2012 class include R&B great Bobby "Blue" Bland, blues singers Howlin' Wolf and Memphis Minnie, big band leader Jimmie Lunceford, and producer Jim Dickinson.

Memphis' significant labels are well represented among the first class with Sun Records (Sam Phillips, Presley, Lewis), Stax Records (founders Estelle Axton and Jim Stewart, Rufus Thomas, Booker T. & the MGs, Isaac Hayes) and Hi Records (Green, producer Willie Mitchell) all getting multiple nods.

The list of names reaches beyond rock and R&B, with figures from the world of jazz (trumpeter George Coleman) hip-hop (Academy Award winners Three 6 Mafia) and gospel (spiritual composer Lucie Campbell) being recognized.

Several other artists, hailing from areas other than Memphis but who made a significant contribution to the city's musical reputation, will also be inducted; this group includes Otis Redding, the Staples Singers and ZZ Top.

The inductees were chosen earlier this year by the Hall of Fame's nominating committee, which includes a cross section of music industry professionals, cultural historians and authors, and museum and foundation directors.

BEE GEES STAR ROBIN GIBB LOSES CANCER BATTLE

21 May 2012

British singer-songwriter and Bee Gees star Robin Gibb lost his long-running battle with cancer last night.

A statement released by relatives said: "The family of Robin Gibb, of the Bee Gees, announce with great sadness that Robin passed away following his long battle with cancer and intestinal surgery. The family have asked that their privacy is respected at this very difficult time."

The announcement of his death prompted an outpouring of grief and tributes to the star by friends and fans.

Broadcaster Paul Gambaccini described the musician as "talented beyond even his own understanding" and "one of the important figures in the history of British music", while stars including Bryan Adams and Mick Hucknall also paid emotional tributes.

Gibb was diagnosed with cancer of the colon and subsequently of the liver after the tumor was discovered during surgery on his bowel for an unrelated condition 18 months ago.  He then fell into a coma last month after contracting pneumonia and was given 10 per cent chance of survival but astounded loved-ones with his recovery, “beating the odds" just days after doctors said he "was in God's hands".

Last year Robin joined forces with The Soldiers to release the charity single “I’ve Gotta Get A Message To You”, which was the official Poppy Appeal single for 2011.  Robin Gibb spearheaded the campaign for the Bomber Command Memorial which will be unveiled by Her Majesty The Queen this year.

THE BEAT TO REISSUE ORIGINAL ALBUMS

20 April 2012

The Beat was formed in Birmingham in 1978, with members Dave Wakeling (vocals, guitar), Ranking Roger (vocals, toasting), Andy Cox (guitar), Everett Morton (drums), veteran Jamaican saxophonist Saxa, and David Steele on bass.  The band was part of the West Midlands ska revival scene that also produced The Specials and The Selecter, whilst London saw the formation of Madness and The Bodysnatchers.  The Beat’s first single was an arresting version of Smokey Robinson’s “Tears Of A Clown”, given a completely new feel, and was backed with their own composition “Ranking Full Stop”.  Released in a one-off deal on Jerry Dammers’ Chrysalis-backed 2-Tone label, the single stormed into the Top 10 in December 1979, and saw the band appear twice on Top Of The Pops.  Backed by Arista, the band formed their own label Go-Feet Records.  The first release in February 1980 was another Top 10 hit, “Hands Off... She’s Mine”, and was the first of twelve chart singles for the band on Go-Feet.

Edsel Records is proud to announce its reissue programme of all three of the band albums, each in Deluxe 2 CD + DVD digipaks, featuring the original albums along with all the non-album A- and B-sides, the many 12” mixes and live tracks, as well as the best of their BBC radio sessions from John Peel, Mike Read and David Jensen’s shows. The DVDs feature the singles promo videos, Top Of The Pops performances and bonus appearances from ITV shows and documentaries.

The first album “I Just Can’t Stop It” (1980, # 3) features the hits “Tears Of A Clown”, “Hands Off... She’s Mine”, “Mirror In The Bathroom”, “Best Friend” and “Stand Down Margaret” as well as 19 bonus tracks, including nine previously unreleased BBC radio sessions. The DVD features three promo videos, five TOTP appearances and a live performance recorded for ITV’s “Alright Now”.

The booklet features an individual note especially written by Rhoda Dakar of The Bodysnatchers, along with the lyrics and photos, memorabilia and ephemera from the band’s own collection.

Edsel is proud to announce the re-issued ‘Copper Blue’; the classic 1992 debut album by Sugar, on 28th May.

Twenty years on, the album has been lovingly remastered from the original tapes, and is presented in improved fidelity.  Remastering engineer Jim Wilson comments: “Just in terms of the size and power and

clarity of it all, the effect of this 2012 remastering is going to be immediately obvious to anybody.”

DEMON TO RELEASE 7” SINGLES FOR RECORD STORE DAY

20 March 2012

Record Store Day 2012 was launched at a secret London location last night, with performances by PiL and Orbital, in front of a crowd of invited journalists and was also streamed live via a Boiler Room TV stream.

Record Store Day's UK coordinator Spencer Hickman said of the event: "The support of artists and labels and music fans for this annual celebration of the indie record shop has been amazing and is really appreciated. To have PiL and Orbital play at our launch is not only a real honour, but it's a sign of how much Record Store Day has developed".

This year 350 exclusive releases are being made available on 21st April, including three releases by Demon.  Demon are planning to offer three different 7” singles each pressed onto coloured vinyl for Record Store Day, featuring a 7” single by T. Rex (A – Telegram Sam, AA – Metal Guru), another 7” single by The Beat (A – Mirror In The Bathroom, AA – Too Nice To Talk To) and lastly, a third 7” single by Sugar (A – If I Can’t Change Your Mind, AA – Clownmaster).  There will be 750 copies of each of the singles up for grabs at the 180 independent record stores across the UK

Other artists who have announced their plans for special RSD releases include Coldplay, Gorillaz, Florence And The Machine, Bat For Lashes, Common, 2manydjs,  Belle & Sebastian, Blondie, Morrissey, Arctic Monkeys, Noel Gallagher, Metronomy, Ramones, Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Cure, The Kinks, The Velvet Underground, The White Stripes, Bruce Springsteen and many more.

Hickman continued: "Record Store Day has now become an established part of the music calendar and what makes it special is the character and individuality of record stores. There's nothing to beat the enthusiasm and atmosphere of a great record shop. The reason great indie stores succeed is that they love music as much as their customers do. Record Store Day is like one huge festival taking place in every part of the UK. It's primarily about the record stores and the events, not just the products available".

Also on the same night, runner-up Marcus Collins reprised his performance of Jackie Wilson’s “Higher And Higher”.  Marcus believed that it was his best performance of the series, a thought that was echoed by judge Tulisa: “That definitely was your best song of the series and it was better this time! I predict a very bright future for you.”

BUSIEST ONLINE SHOPPING DAY OF THE YEAR TODAY!

21 November 2011

Today, Monday 21st November, is set to be the busiest online shopping day of the year with people rushing to buy their Christmas presents to ensure they receive them in time for the big day!

It is anticipated that millions of British and worldwide consumers will take to the internet searching for Christmas gifts, with UK sales expected to reach around£424 million throughout the day and an average spending of about £300,000 per minute, it’s not dubbed ‘Mega Monday’ for nothing!

This year marks a change in trend as it is usually the Monday closest to December, after the last monthly pay packet, that the shoppers hit the internet.   But, according to research by shopping comparison website Kelkoo, people are stocking up early to avoid the issues called by severe weather conditions last year, preventing the delivery of post and presents.

Also, with the increasing number of Smart phones making it easier to access the internet and online retailers, it is expected that online sales will rise this year.  A spokesperson from Kelkoo said:

“In particular, we were interested to see that this year, shopping on mobile phones is set to increase significantly, opening up more opportunities for retailers to sell any place, any time.”

Online retailers are being urged to prepare their stock supplies ready for a surge in demand for items, especially if they are offering particularly attractive offers and prices.

It is believed 33.7 per cent of online spending will be on gifts, 24.5 per cent on Christmas travel, 20.6 per cent on decorations and 6.7 per cent on food and drink and people revealed convenience, reduced stress and cheaper prices as reasons for buying gifts on the internet.

All of the Demon products shown on the website are available for purchase at online retailers including Amazon, HMV and Play.

THE OFFICIAL POPPY APPEAL SINGLE 2011

29 September 2011

The Official Poppy Appeal Single for 2011 is the poignant ‘I’ve Gotta Get a Message to You’, performed by The Soldiers with Bee Gees legend Robin Gibb, it was announced today.

To be released on 23rd October 2011, The Soldiers’ royalties will go to The Royal British Legion’s annual fundraising drive which will be launched nationally on October 27th. It is the first time serving soldiers have released the Official Single for the Poppy Appeal, which will focus this year on the Legion’s assistance in the recovery of injured Armed Forces personnel.

The track has been produced by the renowned Nick Patrick (Katherine Jenkins, Russell Watson) and Jeff Chegwin. Robin Gibb wrote the song with his brothers Barry and Maurice and it was originally recorded by the Bee Gees in 1968, becoming their second number one single on the UK singles chart.

Robin Gibb said:

“Although not written all those years back about soldiers, it can represent the human emotions of servicemen – or in this case, a single soldier. It’s about being trapped in a corner far from home, brave but scared and thinking of loved ones. These men deserve our respect and we need to remind ourselves that they – including of course Ryan, Gary and Richie – are prepared to lay down their lives for our freedoms.”

Russell Thompson, Director of Fundraising for The Royal British Legion, said:

I’ve Gotta Get a Message to You is part of the soundtrack to our lives, and it’s incredibly moving to hear it performed by serving soldiers thinking of those on operations in Afghanistan. We’re proud to be associated with The Soldiers and to have this song as the official tune of the Poppy Appeal in our 90th anniversary year.”

The Soldiers – Sergeant Major Gary Chilton, Staff Sergeant Richie Maddocks and Lance Corporal Ryan Idzi – were aware of Robin Gibb’s charitable work for the Armed Forces and big fans of The Bee Gees when they approached Robin and asked if he would be up for a duet with them – they were over the moon when he agreed.

The song is taken from The Soldiers second album, “Message To You”, due for release on 24th October.  The album features fifteen new songs, all of which were carefully selected for their poignancy and meaning to the armed Forces and their Families and include some absolute classics such as ‘Right Here Waiting’, ‘Desperado’, ‘Pipes Of Peace’ and ends with a rousing version of the anthemic evergreen ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’.

SONGS OF PRAISE IS 50!

26 September 2011

Long-running BBC1 series ‘Songs Of Praise’ is 50 years old this year.

The show has been commended by the Queen and she has offered her congratulations on the programme’s longevity, stating that it was a "remarkable achievement" and called it "a traditional and much-loved part of our Sundays".

The special 50th birthday edition of Songs Of Praise, hosted by Aled Jones, is being recorded at London's Alexandra Palace and is due to feature LeAnn Rimes, tenor Andrea Bocelli and Katherine Jenkins.

The Queen has written her message to recognise the milestone in a printed programme given to the audience for the concert, which will be broadcast on October 2 at 5.30pm.

In it she says: "I congratulate all those involved in bringing Songs of Praise into our homes over the past 50 years during which it has delivered hope, comfort and joy to many millions of viewers and become a traditional and much-loved part of our Sundays.

"In a changing world, the programme's enduring appeal has been its mixture of inspirational music and uplifting human stories, which bring together congregations from far and wide to share timeless hymns and the experiences of fellow Christians whose faith is at the centre of their lives."

The programme will feature hymns such as “Guide Me O Thou Great Redeemer”, “Angel-Voices Ever Singing” and “Jerusalem”.

The Queen's message concludes: "For Songs of Praise to celebrate 50 years without a break is a remarkable achievement and reflects the central role which Christian faith and worship continue to play in the life of communities and the nation.

"I very much hope that this evening's concert will be a great occasion and wish the programme well in the years to come."

ARETHA FRANKLIN MOVIE – FINAL PLANS

14 September 2011

Soul Diva Aretha Franklin is in the final stages of plans to make a movie about her life, based upon her bestselling 1999 autobiography Aretha: From These Roots.

't will be a chronological depiction of my advent from Detroit to New York as a young, aspiring singer... It's going to be pretty straight-up. People who have followed my career from A to Z, they already know some of the things, but there will be other things that are not known," she recently told Billboard.com.

The project, which has been in the pipeline for several years, has been no secret, with the star previously revealing draft scripts and now it seems that the final details are being collated before filming starts:

'We're hammering out the last details,' Aretha revealed this week.

Aretha is currently searching for a star to play her in the film after Oscar-winning actress Halle Berry reportedly turned down the part due to concerns about her singing voice.  However, Aretha is still keen for the actress to take the part, stating:

'Halle Berry,' she said. 'think Halle Berry's gonna get it.'

Aretha also spoke of her desire for Denzel Washington and Terrence Howard to appear in the film; with Denzel playing her father C.L. Franklin - who was a Baptist minister and civil rights leader - and she believes Terrence would be perfect for the role of Smokey Robinson..

When Aretha is not dedicating her time to the movie she is also busy with her singing career, with a duet with Tony Bennett at the Metropolitan Opera House planned for later this month.

Aretha Franklin fans can get a great collection of her hits on two great Demon albums: 100 Hits Legends - Aretha Franklin and Unforgettable: Tribute To Dinah Washington/Runnin' Out Of...

TONY BENNETT TO RELEASE DUETS II

1 September 2011

American pop singer Tony Bennett is due to release a new album of duets, called Duets II’, featuring guest appearances from artists including Andrea Bocelli, Michael Bublé, Mariah Carey, Sheryl Crow, Aretha Franklin, Lady Gaga and the late Amy Winehouse.

Tony was a close friend of the recently deceased Amy Winehouse and paid tribute to the singer at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards, adding that he wished he had given Amy some advice before she died:

"What I wanted to do, I wanted to stop her, I wanted to tell her that many years ago I was naughty also with some drugs." But, Bennett revealed, a quote from a friend stuck with him for life.

"Woody Allen's manager at the time [Jack Rollins] said he knew Lenny Bruce," Bennett explained, recalling a conversation about the boundary-breaking comedian and satirist who died young of a drug overdose. "[Rollins] said one sentence that changed my life: He said, 'He sinned against his talent.' I wanted to tell her that and I had to leave because we were touring all over the world making this album, and I never got a chance to do it”.

The proceeds of the Bennett / Winehouse collaboration will be donated to the foundation set up by Winehouse's father that will help people fight addiction.

“Duets II” will be released on 20th September and includes an album containing 17 great tracks and a video of a first look at the k.d lang duet.  The album is also available for digital download.

For a collection of Tony Bennett’s greatest hits, ‘Tony Bennett – The Essential Collection’ is currently available and contains classics hits including “Give Me The Simple Life”, “Stranger In Paradise” and “It Had To Be You”.

30 August 2011

BBC Radio 6 DJ Dave Pearce returned to his soul-boy roots on Sunday as he celebrated Philadelphia International Records 40th Anniversary with a 2 hour set dedicated to the record label.

Dave was joined by journalist Ralph Tee, compiler of 'The Philadelphia International Box Set' as they journeyed through four decades worth of incredible tracks, featuring artists such as The O'Jays, MFSB, Lou Rawls, Dexter Wansel and Archie Bell & The Dells.

After the release of a ‘Best Of’ album, the recent studio album reissues and the reforming of the band to play at the Albert Hall, O2 Arena and the Brixton Academy gigs, it may come as no surprise that Suede are going to make a new album.

Front-man Brett Anderson is just preparing for the release of his solo album, Black Rainbows, on September 26, but once that is out of the way he plans to focus on getting the band back in the studio.

Speaking to Xfm, Anderson says "after I've promoted this solo album I'm intent to be writing a new Suede album.  I think it's all about keeping yourself interested as a musician, once it gets to this stage in your career it's very much about doing things that keep you excited and making a new Suede record will be exciting and then making another solo record after this will be exciting. It's just about trying to keep yourself interested the whole time."

DOOBIE BROTHERS SHOW THEIR SUPPORT FOR THE MEN AND WOMEN OF THE U.S. MILITARY

12 August 2011

The Doobie Brothers’ John McFee made a special appearance at the Comic Con 2011 event, appearing at the Captain America Military Salute at the LMT Music Lodge in San Diego.

“Overwhelmed” by the occasion and opportunity to be involved, John made a brief speech on behalf of the Doobie Brothers and acknowledged the band’s long term and ongoing commitment to supporting the men and women of the U.S. military.  He then provided the event finale with a performance of a composition of his specially written for the occasion entitled “Age of Innocence”.

John said “I was grateful for the opportunity to be part of this event, and to have a chance to mention the role that our late drummer, Keith Knudsen, played in getting the Doobies back together all those years ago for a truly worthy cause. Keith was inspired by Shad Meshad’s (founder of the National Veterans Foundation) work, and from my perspective our efforts with benefit concerts, charity auctions, and appearances to help our service people really amount to the least we can do.”

The Edsel label is due to reissue all the classic Doobie Brothers albums, including Doobie Bros & Toulouse Street, The Captain And Me & What Were Once Vices, Stampede & Takin’ It To The Streets, and Livin’ On The Fault Line & Minute By Minute.

IS THE END IN SIGHT FOR MUSIC PIRACY?

29 July 2011

Record labels and the music industry are in high spirits and feeling hopeful that the end of music piracy may be in sight as Motion Picture Association has won its High Court battle to force BT to block access to pirate website Newzbin 2.

In what is hoped to be a key turning point in the fight against piracy, Justice Arnold has ruled that the site will no longer be able to use BT’s internet service for further copyright infringement.

He said, “It follows that BT has actual knowledge of other persons using its service to infringe copyright: it knows that the users and operators of Newbin2 infringe copyright on a large scale…it knows that the users of Newzbin2 include BT subscribers, and it knows those users use its service to receive infringing copies of copyright works made available to them by Newzbin2.”

BT have argued that they have no responsibility to act against what their “pipes” are used for, that it was a passive recipient of infringing activity and that it had no actual knowledge of infringement and shouldn’t be required to act beyond taking steps to prevent a particular infringement by a particular use. The judge disagreed.

Newzbin 2 is currently used by its 700,000 members to download illegal copies of films and TV shows, as well as other content from games, publisher and music and so the move has been welcomed from the whole creative sector.

FACEBOOK LAUNCHES B2B SITE

29 July 2011

To further their plans of global domination, Facebook have now developed a platform aimed at small business and offers advice and tips on how to create pages, ads, plug-ins and apps, called Facebook For Business.

This new initiative is just the latest instalment in a series of websites and pages launched in order to help companies to understand the benefits of the world’s largest social networking site, and runs alongside pre-existing Facebook pages covering a range of categories, including music, media and marketing.

A spokesperson from Facebook describes their aim:  “Facebook allows small businesses to create rich social experiences, build lasting relationships and amplify the most powerful type of marketing - word of mouth. We created Facebook.com/business to make it even easier for people to reach these objectives and grow.”

Earlier this year the social network launched an online resource showcasing creative campaigns that have been successful using Facebook for brand activity, named Facebook Studio.

It is thought that this avenue of business has been developed to compete with the new Google+ social network, which is also planning on launching a full Google+ business site later this year.

JOE ARROYO DIES AGED 55

27 July 2011

Colombian salsa star, Joe Arroyo, has died at the age of 55, after being treated in hospital for heart, lung and kidney problems.

Arroyo, whose most famous hit was La Rebelion, began singing in brothels in the Caribbean city of Cartagena at the age of eight and went on to sing with a number of Colombia's most famous salsa groups.  He also drew on a rich heritage of other Afro-Colombian rhythms during his career, and composed over 100 songs.

Rising to fame in the 1970’s as part of the band ‘Fruko y Sus Tesos’, later forming his own band ‘La Verdad’, Arroyo, born Alvaro Jose Arroyo Gonzalez, had a colourful life, including problems with drugs, all of which provided material for his music.

His wife said Arroyo died "peacefully" in Barranquilla, another Colombian city on the Caribbean coast and the country’s president, Juan Manual Santos, described his death as "a great loss for music and for Colombia" on the social network, Twitter.

Joe was due to be awarded a lifetime achievement award at this year's Latin Grammy celebrations.

10 REASONS WHY SALSOUL RECORDS IS THE GREATEST DANCE LABEL OF ALL TIME!

7 July 2011

·                    Musical Vision – Salsoul’s music has always been the coolest in town because they made a point of keeping on top of musical trends and only using the best producers, musicians, mixers and artists, which is why Salsoul records are still being sampled and remixed some 35 years later.

·                    Innovation – Salsoul Records was the first record company to allow DJ’s to remix the original master tapes and the first company to release a commercially available 12” single. Their contribution to dance music culture has shaped the dance music industry for the last 35 years.

·                    Disco Music – When Quentin Tarrantino used the term “dead as disco” in Pulp Fiction he certainly wasn’t talking about Salsoul! ·                    1970’s/80’s Dance Culture – Salsoul records was truly at the centre of U.S. club culture throughout the early 1970’s to the mid 1980’s. For further detail on this great period and Salsoul’s rich seam of history, please read Tim Lawrence’s definitive book “Love Saves The Day”.

·                    The Remix – Salsoul was there right from the word go and has the world’s best catalogue of truly innovative remixes from 1974 to present.

·                    The 12” Single – Salsoul records released the first-ever commercially released 12” single - Double Exposure’s “Ten Percent” which sold 110,000 copies in a single week upon it’s release.

·                    Great Artists – Loleatta Holloway, First Choice, Instant Funk, Double Exposure, Inner Life, Love Committee, Moment Of Truth, Joe Bataan, Candido, Carol Williams, Leroy Burgess, Ripple, The Salsoul Orchestra, Skyy, Aurra, Jimmy Castor, Eddie Holman Etc, Etc Now Being Bought By A New Generation

·                    Great Producers – Norman Harris, Ron Kersey, Ron Baker, Earl Young, Floyd Smith, Patrick Adams, Greg Carmichael, Stan Lucas, Leroy Burgess, Bunny Sigler, Vince Montana Jnr Etc, Etc. Productions that have stood the test of time!

·                    Great Remixers – Tom Moulton, Walter Gibbons, Larry Levan, Frankie Knuckles, Shep Pettibone, Tee Scott, Danny Tenaglia, Joey Negro, Steve ‘Silk’ Hurley, Todd Terry, David Morales, Freddy Bastone, Tommy Musto, Masters At Work Etc, Etc. The world’s greatest mixers of all time didn’t work for slouches!

WHAT FACEBOOK PLANS MEAN FOR MUSIC

5 July 2011

With the Facebook f8 developer conference due to take place next month, the company’s CEO and president Mark Zuckerberg is due to make an announcement about the direction the company is due to go in – an announcement that he has described as “something awesome”.

Rumours imply that the social network is planning to integrate streaming music services, but the tech press is expecting the announcement to focus on a Skype-style video system to expand from the basic instant messaging service already in existence.

With an estimated 750 million worldwide user, Facebook is surely a force to be reckoned with and the company has the scale and momentum to make a significant impact on the attempt to weave music into the ever-expanding world of social networking.

According to information leaked to Evolver.fm, it is rumored that features in Facebook's imminent music offering include a “persistent play button” (meaning users can play music wherever they are on the site), a play history, real-time feeds of what friends are playing as well as what acts, tracks and albums are currently trending.

It is clear that music is a huge focus for Facebook this year, a trend sure to be followed by the other big names in social networking, including Twitter and Google+.

Jaki Graham, one of the most appealing Soul entertainers to emerge from the UK, will also be performing.  Her track ‘Could It Be I’m Falling In Love?’ reached No.5 in the British charts in March 1985 and Jaki also achieved a Guiness World record as the first black British female solo artist to have 6 consecutive Top 10/20 hits, a feat unheard of by a black British female at that time.

Jaki Graham will be performing classic tracks including ‘Could It Be I’m Falling In Love’, ‘Set Me Free’ and ‘I Want To Thank You’.

Ticket prices range from £25 - £75 and are available from the following outlets: Ticketmaster, TicketLine, See Tickets.

WEEKENDER FILM REVIVES THE RAVE SCENE

29 June 2011

It appears that the hottest new trend for this Autumn is to be “raving”.  And contributing to this trend is the new British film Weekender due for release in September.

A nostalgic nod to the 90’s rave scene, this film is joining current acts, such as Chase and Status, in creating a revival of this type of music and social scene.

A trailer for the film shows the theme of the story:

Channel 4 News has covered the story of “rave revival” and the Weekender film is this news bulletin:

Harmless will be releasing an album to accompany the film, also due for release in September.

JESUS AND MARY CHAIN REISSUES COMING – SEPTEMBER 2011

28 June 2011

Scottish alternative rock band ‘The Jesus And Mary Chain’ are due to reissue two of their greatest albums – Psychocandy and Darklands – on the Edsel label this September.

Since its first release in November 1985, Psychocandy has received a massive amount of critical acclaim and is now widely regarded as a classic. Regularly featured in articles on classic albums, it has recently appeared on the NME’s list of the Top 50 Greatest Debut Album Ever and Q Magazine’s list of the 100 Greatest British Albums, and continues to exert a considerable influence on contemporary bands.

A deluxe expanded edition, featuring all the non-album b-sides, as well as previously unreleased demos, rare outtakes including the controversial early track “Jesus Fuck” which the pressing plant refused to manufacture at the time due to the blasphemous lyrics, will be released on the 19th September.

It will also feature a DVD showing all of the promo videos for the singles released from the album alongside seminal and previously unreleased TV appearances, including their jaw-dropping live TV debut on the Old Grey Whistle Test, a performance of two songs on The Tube, a studio performance and interview from Belgian TV, and never before seen footage of the infamous riot at North London Polytechnic.

This release will be joined by Darklands, a more subtle and understated album, containing their biggest chart hit “April Skies” and several of the Reid brothers’ most loved songs.  This release will also take the deluxe expanded edition format, including DVD, and will feature all the non-album b-sides, the pre-Darklands Some Candy Talking EP, outtakes, the complete BBC Radio Sessions the band recorded in this period, previously unreleased material includes a much sought-after Janice Long session from 1986, an alternate version of the “Some Candy Talking” single recorded for the NME, a recently unearthed version of the track “Darklands” with strings, and a BBC audio interview with Jim and William Reid from 1987.

The DVD features the promo videos for all the singles, a first time on DVD for the band-made film for b-side “Kill Surf City”, and previously unreleased archival TV appearances, including their only appearance on Top Of The Pops, alongside performances on Belgian TV and ITV’s short-lived TOTP rival The Roxy.

B.B. KING GETS GREAT RESPONSE AT GLASTO

27 June 2011

An instrumental fanfare and a 15 minute wait is what it took to introduce B.B. King, the “king of Blues” to the stage at Glastonbury this weekend.

King, 85, fulfilled this year’s “living legend” slot on the Pyramid stage and the blues veteran had no problems straddling the generation gap, actually shining brightest without the sax solos and slap-bas of his backing band, proving that he is still very much a legend.

At times, his playing is staccato and stripped-back, punctuating songs with curlicues of melody, at others it's mellifluous and masterful, showcasing shimmering vibrato. And his voice has not diminished with age either.  “I Need You” summoned the spirit of Al Green, while “The Thrill is Gone” channeled Muddy Waters.

With eyes closed and head raised heavenwards, Kind was blissfully absorbed in his blues throughout his set and, when he announced, "I wish we could just go on and on and on...", there was no doubting his conviction.

ENGLISH NATIONAL OPERA TO PERFORM VERDI’S ‘SIMON BOCCANEGRA’

21 June 2011

A tale of public feuds and private grief, set against a backdrop of civil war, ‘Simon Boccanegra’ is revered as one of Verdi's most sublime and mature masterpieces.

The opera is conducted by ENO's Olivier Award-winning music director Edward Gardner and marks the ENO debut of the award-winning young Russian director/designer Dmitri Tcherniakov.

Leading Verdi baritone Bruno Caproni (ENO's magisterial Nabucco) sings the title role of the privateer-turned-politician, with Brindley Sherratt as Fiesco, the implacable foe who discovers, too late, the bonds of love that bind them.

The production will run until 9th July at the London Coliseum, and tickets are available via the English National Opera website.  Time Out is also running a promotion for cheaper tickets on their website, giving a whopping 75% discount until midnight tonight.

For those unable to make it to the production, Crimson has a 4CD album of Verdi compositions as part of The Composers range currently available (also available for digital download).

BOBBY WOMACK LONDON TOUR STARTS THIS WEEK

20 June 2011

There’s no other voice in soul music quite like Bobby Womack’s. It’s rough, raw and raspy – a sound that most singers could only achieve it they’d gargled with razor blades – and oozes gospel-fuelled soul power in abundance. And when he utters one of his blood-curdling falsetto screams it sounds like he’s directly channelling the Holy Ghost. In just one short vocal phrase, Bobby Womack can convey more emotion than most singers can muster in an entire song.

Not only is he a terrific, one-of-a-kind vocalist, Bobby Womack is also an accomplished guitarist and, more significantly, he’s a great songwriter who has penned some of the soul genre’s most enduring masterpieces. In 2010 at the age of 66, he’s still musically active, having just contributed his trademark vocals to the Gorillaz latest album, ‘Plastic Beach.’ Womack’s music has also featured very heavily in the movies through the years, predominantly in Tarntino’s Jackie Brown, Fish Tank, Ali, Meet The Parents and American Gangster.

And this week he starts a four-day run at the Jazz Cafe in London (Monday 20th – Thursday 23rd June) before moving onto Blackburn on the 25th June.

The Music Club Deluxe label have released a 40-track collection, which features the choicest Womack cuts from the 1970 and ‘80’s, thought to be Bobby’s most productive period, as well as some of his late-’60s sides – including tracks originally recorded for the Minit, United Artists and Beverly Glen labels.

SUPERJAM 2011

17 June 2011

On Friday 8th July the Royal Albert Hall will be rocking along with music legends Rick WakemanJon Lord, Joe Bonamassa, Newton Faulkner, Thunder's Danny Bowes and Deep Purple to raise money for charity The Sunflower Jam, hosted by Master of Ceremonies Jeremy Irons.

The Sunflower Jam was set up in 2006 by Jacky Paice and came about in order to raise awareness and fundraise for integrated and functional medicine, and does so by supporting initiatives set up to bridge the gap between integrated, functional and conventional medicine.

Super Jam 2011, tipped to be the charity's biggest event to date, will help to increase the already raised funds from past events - which have included guest performances by the likes of Status Quo, Paul Weller, Robert Plant, Ray Cooper, Bruce Dickinson, Suggs and the late Gary Moore.

Jon Lord of Deep Purple, one of many active supporters of the charity, said: 'The Sunflower Jam has become an established event for two reasons: because it’s such a great cause and because it’s such huge fun!'

JIM CROCE REISSUE FOR RELEASE JULY 2011

16 June 2011

Almost 40 years after his untimely death in an aeroplane crash (in September 1973, aged just 30), singer-songwriter Jim Croce is still remembered by the millions of fans he made through his music and Edsel are pleased to represent his three albums, as well as sixteen recordings, issued on a posthumous 2CD compilation due for release on the 25th July 2011.

Jim Croce’s emergence to global prominence came in the early 1970’s, an era dominated by the confessional singer-songwriter – albums such as Carole King’s ‘Tapestry’, James Taylor’s ‘Sweet Baby James’ and Neil Young’s ‘Harvest’ sold in their multi-millions.

After travelling the folk circuit and a couple of false starts, Croce released “You Don’t Mess Around With Jim” in July 1972. The title track reached # 8 and “Operator” reached # 17 in the US when issued as singles, and the album eventually got to # 1. “Life And Times” was issued in February 1973, a # 7 album which featured the # 1 hit “Bad, Bad Leroy Brown”.

The title track of “I Got A Name” had been issued as a single, but the album wasn’t issued until after Croce’s tragic death. The album subsequently sold millions, as did single issues of two of his best-known songs, “Time In A Bottle” and “I’ll Have To Say I Love You In A Song”.

His unfortunate death came at a point in his career when he seemed set for a lengthy and rewarding career, but fans are now able to remember the magic of this aspiring artist with this new album.

MANHATTAN TRANSFER REISSUE DUE FOR RELEASE JULY 2011

16 June 2011

Following on from the Music Club Deluxe release, ‘Chanson D’amour: The Very Best Of Manhattan Transfer’, earlier this year, Edsel is following suit and are planning to reissue Manhattan Transfer’s second and third albums, originally released in 1976 and 1978, together in one package.

During this period, the band were even more popular in the UK than at home in the US.  Following the UK number one single ‘Chanson D’Amour’ in February 1977, ‘Coming Out’, the album on which it featured, rose to number 12 in the UK albums chart. The album was produced by Richard Perry (Carly Simon, Nilsson, Barbra Streisand, Ringo Starr) with the cream of the US’s session musicians. The following year ‘Pastiche’ reached the Top Ten of the UK album chart, and featured four hit singles: ‘Walk In Love’, ‘On A Little Street In Singapore’, ‘Where Did Our Love Go’ and ‘Who, What, When, Where, Why’.

The album is due for release on the 25th July and contains a booklet featuring a 3000 word note by Man Tran authority Tony Rounce, which tells the story of the group in great detail, as well as examining the background history of every song.

The band is currently touring across America.

DARYL HALL AND JOHN OATES ARE BACK!

16 June 2011

Fresh from winning the Music Icon Award at the "TV Land Awards 2011” in April this year, Daryl Hall and John Oates are back with John Oates’ new album "Mississippi Mile" and also a great reissue from Edsel.

The new album, ‘The Atlantic Albums: Whole Oats + Abandoned Luncheonette…Plus + War Babies’, is the first time Hall & Oates’ first three albums, all recorded for the Atlantic label between 1972 and 1974, have been reissued together.  The 2CD album will be released on the 25th July.

The album also features four bonus tracks: one song from the “Whole Oats” sessions and three songs exclusive to “No Goodbyes”, a compilation issued after the duo’s departure from Atlantic. These three songs were recorded after the “War Babies” album.

Legendary producer Arif Mardin (Aretha Franklin, Roberta Flack, the Bee Gees, Chaka Khan and many more) took the controls for debut album “Whole Oats” in 1972, as well as 1973’s “Abandoned Luncheonette”. Considered by both Hall and Oates to be their best album, it features the slow-burning hit, the absolute classic “She’s Gone”, still the duo’s best-known song.

For “War Babies”, they recruited fellow Philadelphian Todd Rundgren, eclectic solo act and producer extraordinaire (“Bat Out Of Hell”, XTC, Psychedelic Furs, Patti Smith, The Tubes, Sparks and many more). Resultantly, the trio experimented with a darker, edgy sound, which Rundgren refers to as the first “Daryl Hall solo album”. Their next move was to the RCA label, and eventual massive global success in the late 70s/early 80s, but these albums are where it all started.

The band is touring across America from 15th June to 11th September.

The schedule is to run as follows:

4th August                     Donald Runnicles and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra with Brahms Symphony No. 2.

The great works of Brahms can also be heard on a new album from the Crimson label as part of the new “Composers” range.

INDIE LABELS DOMINATE ALBUM CHART

7 June 2011

There are currently 13 indie albums in the midweek top 40, with releases from Suede, Battles, Status Quo, Prodigy and Fleet Foxes, between number 10 and 40, reflecting the strong start to the year for the indies.

According to the OCC midweek sales flashes, indie labels currently occupy five of the top 10 slots in the albums charts, with Arctic Monkeys way out in front.  The new album “Suck It And See”, on Domino, has already sold more than 38000 copies, placing it well ahead of Adele’s “21”, on indie label XL.

Example’s “Changed The Way You Kiss” on Ministry of Sound, another indie label, also looks set to top the single charts on Sunday, which would show the new artist beating veteran chart-toppers Coldplay and outselling its nearest competitor, Pitbbull’s “Give Me Everything” (on J) by more than two to one.

Managing director of PIAS UK, Peter Thompson, which distributes all of the indie releases in the midweek top 10, said the reason for this recent indie-based success was down to “the quality of artists” in question.

“Seeing a top ten containing such diverse artists such as Frank Turner, Arctic Monkeys, Seasick Steve and, obviously, Adele is exciting to look at and just shows the strength and breadth of the independent sector,” he said.
